Diamond Thug: Choo Choo

Possibly their most experimental track to date.

Directly after a sold-out performance at Pretoria’s Park Acoustics and achieving a notable 1 million streams on Spotify, Cape Town-based alternative-indie outfit Diamond Thug face few incentives to slow down. In light of their upcoming debut album, the band’s decision to unleash this particular new track has got fans (and me, unapologetically) salivating for its release in April.

Taking on a relatively gloomy dynamic, ‘Choo Choo’ encompasses halcyon-esque synth lines and an incredibly enticing atmosphere. Relentlessly mesmerising, Chantel Van T’s ethereal vocal dynamic is effortlessly carried by an unwavering undercurrent of bewitching electronic elements and drum patterns. Think alt-J meets The xx but with even more synth.

“Chewed you up, you’re tired” chants reverb-drenched Van T, lyrically focusing on “the dichotomy of minds in a toxic relationship”. The track’s title aptly reflects this, but it’s their newly-found, relatively avant-garde, ebb-and-flow dynamic which undoubtedly tells the story.

Progressive and unconventionally-structured, the track’s last quarter showcases a wide array of textures engulfing the listener in a climax of pure tension which makes this, possibly, their most experimental track to date.
