Justin Serrao releases ‘Are You Lonely video

An easy-listening acoustic ballad reminiscent of love lost.

It’s customary to be the one receiving gifts on your birthday but Justin Serrao opted to do things a bit differently for his birthday this year, releasing the first single ‘Are You Lonely?’ off his upcoming EP “One Year Warning”.

Recorded at High Seas Studio with the ever-faithful Jacques Du Plessis and Gavin Flaks, ‘Are You Lonely’ is an easy-listening ballad that was inspired by a toast Serrao’s friend Garth Barnes (CrashCarBurn) gave to his wife at their wedding, as well as a slight talking-too that Serrao received by an ex-girlfriend. The video, directed by Charl Fraser, is a straight-forward live performance-rooted piece and is the first time I’ve seen Serrao in a video flanked by a band and it’s much more fitting to his current aesthetic.

It’s been interesting to watch Serrao grow from a reluctant pop star of sorts into the fully-fledged country rock artist that he is now – spurred in part by his epic country-rooted collaboration with CrashCarBurn, ‘Winding Road’. It’s a tricky genre to navigate in SA at the moment but he’s doing it with a degree of authenticity that’s refreshing. Watch the video below.
