I usually do some sort of social commentary on this blog during the week, but after my media essay on the Caster Semenya debate and looking at good old Julius’ comments from a million different angles, I really couldn’t bring it upon myself to get my typing fingers too dirty this week. Besides, I’m on holiday till Monday. Then general commentary will resume. Or perhaps it’ll resume now? Hmmm…
A few days ago a link to this video was posted by a friend of mine on Facebook. I had completely forgotten that this “banned” advert called ‘Soweto’ had ever existed. I remember still seeing it premier on SABC 1 years ago when we were all still singing “Simunye, ooooh we are one”. The black kids never told me that “we are one” is basically what “Simunye” meant, so in essence I was doing a double take while they were all laughing their asses off at me. Ah yes. Good times. Anyway, I remember waiting patiently after ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ to catch a glimpse of this add. It fascinated me. And it still does. Give it a look. I guarantee it will fascinate you if you haven’t seen it already.
Oh and if anyone tells you that this advert was really “banned” they’re lying. Flat out.
I keep getting invites for events at Chevelle. So maybe that’s where I’ll be tonight. Or maybe not. Maybe I’ll be at work. Did you know that Chevelle charge R10 000 to be a Black Card Member holder for the year? Just throwing it out there.
