All I wanted to do yesterday was write a nice little post about my more-than-thrilling Somerset West (which from now on will be known as The Wild West) experience, however I found myself having to edit a pretty harmless sentence out of the second paragraph. And I did it, willingly. However after having a conversation with Pope, I realised that I cannot pretend to be in favour of free speech when I, myself, am to kak scared to make a statement and stick by it.
And what intrigues me is that what I wrote wasn’t even intended to be received in a negative light, it just was. So, dear readers, what I am trying to say is, that this will never happen again. If I take it upon myself to make a “controversial” statement, or any statement for that matter, I will then take it upon myself to stick to my word.
So today is Wednesday, and I’m quite enjoying these mid-week breaks where I have nothing better to do than sit on Facebook or read ‘Grapes of Wrath’. Last night’s entertainment was provided by The Pinkertons at The Waiting Room and since this was only the first time I’d seen this band in action, I was a little confused to discover that they are in fact, a 5-piece. Why was I under the impression that it was only 3 of them? Inggs and I were lekker confused for a minute or two, but I suppose we eventually figured it out.
I love the surplus of new talent on display at the moment. It’s thrilling. Almost as thrilling as aKING going to Buenos Aires to film ‘You and I’ checkout the teaser here. So this is what happens when bands start making a little bit of moola? They get hot Spanish models to act in their music videos. Well as far as I’m concerned, anything’s gotta be better than ‘In the Twilight’. Anyway, The Pinkertons have only played two shows up to this here date but they have a nice foundation to work with.
I’ve always been under the impression that Gabi-lee is a model-turned-singer-effort, or whatever, but I was put in my place last night by a buddy of hers outside The Waiting Room’s bathroom. It’s nice to have friends who so violently defend your cause. Well wherever she started, her vocals last night were monotone and safe (I hate this word) and to quote Chris Slabber ex drummer of Howard Roarke (remember them??) “I’d like to see her grow a pair.” Hmmm. Figuratively speaking, naturally. We could get into a sexiest debate here, but I really am too tired to spark any kind of malevsfemale discussion today.
The first few songs were safe (there’s that word again) and while Inggs clicked away with her camera there was more interaction between Gabi-lee and rhythm guitarist Pienaar than there was between the band and the crowd. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when their timing was off or someone hit a wrong note, it showed on their faces. This is something I am 100% against. I don’t want to know how the ship runs, unless we hit a problematic iceberg. And for most of the time, if we hit little, insignificant icebergs, I probably won’t notice unless someone shouts, “HOLY MOTHER WE’RE GOING DOWN!! Oh no, false alarm.” Do you get where I’m going with this?
Lead guitarist Antonie on the other end looked squished and isolated and out of the loop, despite his impressive riffs every now and again. I think this “space issue” had more to do with The Waiting Room set up though than anything else. This band needs a proper stage. And then halfway through I reckon the guys all got into the groove – with exception of the drummer and the bassist, who looked as though they were having a jol in the right hand corner the entire evening – and starting delivering some bluesy dance-worthy tunes. And it showed in the crowd reaction, I even attempted a Jack-jig but quit while I was ahead. Not a bad ending to a second gig. Not bad at all.
I now need to go make myself look respectable for ‘…miskien’. Goddamitt I’ve been looking forward to this play for so long.
