10 Acts You Shouldn’t Miss At CTEMF

This Friday the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival kicks off at the Grand Parade with a stellar, jam-packed line-up. But with just over 30 acts to choose from, whose set do you need to make sure you’re front-and-centre for come crunch time?

I got Robin Brink and Ross Dorkin (two thirds of glowLDB & Beatenberg) to narrow it down to the Top 10 Acts that they reckon you should schedule those reminders for, now.

  • Julz Sanchez – We’re big fans of the Private Life sound, so we’re very keen to see Julz for some classic vibes.
  • DJ Mighty – Mighty has the most excellent, eclectic taste in music. As part of Mabu Vinyl he’s got a killer record collection: he’s surely gonna kill it.
  • Fever Trails – Our friend Nic from Bateleur [and other projects] is a brilliant composer of soundscapes. We think his set is gonna be a masterly trip in sound design.
  • CID RIM – This Viennese electronic music producer and jazz drummer has done some incredible work on the Lucky Me record label, so we’re really excited to see him in SA.
  • Dirty Paraffin – We’re huge fans of our friend Smiso’s futuristic rap duo. We’re actually really hoping to hear them drop ‘Gusheshe’ [as they did at Oppikoppi last year], as well as hits like ‘Papap! Papap!’ and hopefully ‘Amantombazane’.
  • TranceMicSoul – This Red Bull Music Academy New York alumnus plays some incredible forward thinking sets, so we’re excited to hear what he’s gonna drop. TranceMicSoul definitely represents a new wave in the SA house scene.
  • Shimza – DJ Shimza’s been a big supporter of our Pluto track! As rapidly rising name in the SA house scene, we’re keen to hear what sounds he’s gonna drop.
  • Jullian Gomes/Culoe De Song – We’re major fans of Jullian Gomes. ‘Love Song 28’ is just too good. The idea that he’s playing back to back with the deep/tribal house prodigy Culoe De Song is too exciting! We think this is going to be incredible.
  • Black Coffee – Probably our favourite South African house DJ and the local act we’re most excited to see. Black Coffee makes a phenomenal instrument of 2 decks and a mixer. We’re looking forward to a transcendent set from the master.
  • Dixon – Finally: what we’re most eager to see/hear is the Innvervisions label boss from Berlin. There’s so much gold on the Innvervisions catalogue, so we’re certain this is going to be a next-level dance music experience.
