From Wikipedia: “An opening act, warm-up act, or supporting act is an entertainment act (musical, comedic, or otherwise), that performs at a concert before the featured act, or “headliner”.
The opening act’s performance serves to “warm up” the audience, making it appropriately excited and enthusiastic for the headliner.
In rock music, the opening act will usually be an up-and-coming group with a smaller following than the featured artist. On long concert tours different opening acts may be used for different legs of the tour.”
Am I buying a ticket to watch the support acts or am I buying a ticket to watch the main act – the act that made me WANT to go and buy a ticket in the first place?
So this is how it works, once everyone has stopped moaning about whatever live act is gracing our shores, the next thing to happen is the moan about the support acts. This band is too different. That band is not relevant anymore. And why the hell would they choose that support act? And why don’t they choose something that is similar to the main act? And who the hell is that band? And on and on the moaning goes.
But then… people start using words like “plethora”. There are a “plethora” of local acts to choose from and they chose that?
Okay fine, so there are a lot of acts to choose from but how do you even go about picking just one? Most bands all have one thing that makes them deserving of being up on stage. But in my opinion, that deserving factor shouldn’t be sounding exactly like the headlining band.
I mean, when it comes to the support acts do I really want to watch a band that is similar to the main act? And why? Why would you (i.e. promoters) have an act that matches the main act? I want my experience of the main act to be exactly that – THE MAIN ACT. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind if there was just cool music playing in the background while I stood in the queue to piss, to buy a beer or to buy some merch. But I definitely don’t want to tire myself out watching a support act. I want to keep every ounce of energy for the main act. And that is why it is just a support act. A band that plays a bit of music in the background, that keeps things going before the main act arrives.
I have to be honest that when I have flown overseas to go and watch bands, I have never once found out who the support acts are. I bought a plane ticket and a concert ticket to go and watch the HEADLINER.
What really irks me though, is a plethora of douche bags that suddenly come out of the woodwork, whenever a band/artist is announced as coming to South Africa, to moan for various godforsaken reasons. Either go or don’t go. But I am sure that if you take the plethora of carrots out of your asses – you might just have a good time, whether you approve of the support act or not.
