Local music and events startup City Soirée recently launched an easy new online tool for music fans to host their favourite artist or band for one of their signature house concerts, called Secret Soirée. The idea behind Secret Soirée is simple: give fans the opportunity to connect more directly with their favourite musicians and provide more performance opportunities more often for artists.
SECRET SOIRÉE IS WHERE EVERYONE HAS A FRONT ROW SEAT AND A BACKSTAGE PASS.
City Soirée uses their innovative — and first of its kind in South Africa — crowdfunding approach to facilitate and help organise these intimate concerts. Each event needs 30 fans to “pledge” in order for the show to happen. A pledge is like buying an early bird ticket but with the power to actually make great shows possible. As soon as the target of 30 pledges is reached the event can go ahead and general tickets are made available. These are based on the size of the living room where the concert will take place. So, for example, if it can hold 50 people another 20 general tickets are made available. If the target isn’t reached in time then the show gets cancelled and everyone gets a refund. This takes the risk out of it as well as ensures that the artist gets paid and that there is a nice sized audience. Each Secret Soirée is capped at 60 people in order to ensure an intimate and exclusive experience for everyone. The host’s address is kept secret and only given to guests who pledge or buy general tickets.
Artists and fans can connect in a much more personal way. Hang out, share stories and maybe even a bottle of wine. You get to listen to your favourite band with ONLY other fans that love them as much as you do.
The company recently celebrated their 50th Secret Soirée since launching in mid-2013. Past events include quite an impressive and diverse range of artists such as Nakhane Touré, Francois van Coke, The Brother Moves On, Derek Gripper, Mr Cat & The Jackal, Bateleur, Guy Buttery, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Shane Cooper, Bokani Dyer, Gert Vlok Nel, American singer-songwriter Willy Mason, Laura Burhenn from The Mynabirds and Bright Eyes, and many more.
Fans in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria who would like to host a Secret Soirée can go to their website for more information and fill in the easy application form. You choose the artist and City Soirée will contact them, see if they are available and set it up. All that is left to do is spread the word and get friends and other fans to pledge!
