In January Sam Smith’s biggest career hit was dragged into the spotlight by listeners who compared it to Tom Petty’s classic ‘I Won’t Back Down’. Thankfully for Smith, his team settled out of court quickly and agreed to pay Petty (and co-writer Jeff Lynne) 12.5% of the song’s total royalties.
