We’re incredibly excited to host HOJ in Cape Town for an incredible 4 hour set. Let the Robot Heart / Burning Man favourite take you on a journey, while Dutch Tech-House DJ/Producer will be holding it down on the main floor this Saturday alongside Cape Town’s finest acts.
Hoj is a weird name. It’s just 3 letters, but only 3% of people in the world pronounce it correctly. It doesn’t translate well (especially into Spanish). And is often misspelled. The mischief caused by these 3 little letters is a constant source of amusement for Hoj and those closest to him.
Don’t worry, we’ll tell you how to pronounce “Hoj” correctly. That way if you ever meet Hoj, you can surprise him by pronouncing his name correctly. But we’ll hold out a bit longer for dramatic effect.
So yes, lots of mischief caused by the 3 letters that are his name. Fitting, because Hoj sets out to create mischief in all his creative endeavors. His music is deep and sexy in a way that encourages crowds to create a little mischief of their own.
This sound earned him a night at Berlin’s legendary Panorama Bar amongst a slew of other clubs and stages around the world. He was one of the founding members of the Opulent Temple at Burning Man, and in recent years his sets atop the Robot Heart bus have become legendary in their own right. He continues his musical escapades alongside Lee Burridge as a resident for All Day I Dream. And also enjoys a residency with Listed Productions.
He is currently based in Los Angeles. And you pronounce his name with a long “O” – like the “O” in “NO”. And a soft “J” – like the “G” in “MIRAGE”. The “H” is not silent.
Over the years, Unders (Duncan Meulema) has been fortunate enough to do a lot of exciting things in the world of dance music. He has been playing all over the world, with recent trips taking him to South Africa, Berlin, Mexico and San Francisco. In the Netherlands he has performed on events such as Time Warp, Awakenings, ADE, and Welcome To The Future and a balanced mix of the snazzy venues the Dutch have to offer. Unders’ productions also resonated internationally; appearing on renowned record labels: BlaBla, Sound Architecture, and Eklektisch with remixes from artists such as Martin Stimming, Nuno Dos Santos. Satori, Affkt and Edu Imbernon.
As a promoter, Duncan has been hosting label nights and events for the likes of Dirtybird, Connaisseur, Cadenza, and Supplement facts, importing the Circoloco Ibiza circus twice, as well as a series of parties in Amsterdam’s underground club and hotspot Studio 80 and Rotterdam’s Maassilo featuring the likes of Damian Lazarus, Trentemoller, Booka Shade, Minilogue, Claude Von Stroke, Guy Gerber, dOP, Pan Pot and many more of his personal favorites.
He’s cofounder of the Dancefair Expo, an annual two-day educational convention for DJ’s and music producers. The most recent edition welcomed over 5000 attendees. See logo at bottom of website for more info.
The last couple of years his focus has been on travelling, meeting new people, and finding a more laidback attitude towards the whole rat race that is the music scene. Now it’s all about trying new tools and instruments; experimenting with his studio workflow. As a DJ he’s always looking for pieces with a lasting quality; timeless sounds and grooves to add to the collection he has built over the past fifteen years. His residency at beach club Whoosah, gigs in Mexico, Berlin, Africa Burn, Burning Man including a slot on the Robot Heart bus this year plus releases on Sincopat, Solselectas and Groove On seem to hint that Unders has found his place.
