Introducing Cutting the Wax

Cutting the Wax is a brand new series of live recorded sessions aimed at exposing new, up-and-coming Durban musicians.

Conceptualised by Paul Jones and Ryan van Rooyen (Fuego Heat), Cutting the Wax features young, exciting, gifted artists still in the infancy of their careers.

The goal of these sessions is to expose these young talents to a wider, online market, as well as provide the artists with high quality audio and video recordings of their performances that they can add to their portfolio.

All of the sessions take place at Durban’s famous Khaya Records. Khaya has become something of a hub for young musicians recently thanks in part to initiatives such as these. Go to Khaya any day of the week and you’ll more than likely bump into one of Durban’s rising stars, perusing records, planning their next project, or just chilling out.

All of the audio is professionally recorded and mixed by Steve Jones at 286 Studios. The video portion of the sessions is handled by Abigael and Calvin Thompson.

Episode one of Cutting the Wax features Clayton Human, a Zululand based folk artist whose dark-yet-beautiful musings recall lost loves and the inevitability of change. A somewhat elusive guy, Clayton never fails to make an impact whenever he pops into town for a show. Clayton has recently been included in the first round of artist announcements for Endless Daze 2018.

Episode two will feature Rhea Blek singer-songwriter from Durban, creating a unique genre-less sound that straddles influences of neo-soul, R&B and jazz. She recently released her debut EPTHIIIRD WAV, and she has spent the year supporting some of the country’s biggest acts with her show stealing performances.
