Soweto Gospel Choir wins third Grammy Award

The Soweto Gospel Choir just won their third Grammy Award at the award ceremony that took place last night in Los Angeles.

The group won the award in the category for Best World Music Album for their album Freedom, which was recorded in June 2018 as part of the group’s tribute to the 100 Years of Mandela celebrations.

It features a selection of struggle songs including their goosebump-worthy version of Johnny Clegg’s poignant Asimbonanga.

Receiving the award on behalf of Soweto Gospel Choir were album producer Diniloxolo Ndlakuse  Shimmy Jiyane, Mary Mulovhedzi and Mulalo Mulovhedzi whose late father David Mulovhedzi co-founded the group with producer Beverly Bryer 17 years ago.
