Feather-light and soaked in silvery, raindrop melody – that’s the best way to describe “There Is Only One Forever”, a track pulled from Nicky Schrire’s latest project.
ESCAPE: The Ingrid Jonker Suite is a collection of translations of Jonker’s poetry set to vocals, spoken word and a sting quartet – which was performed at the 2018 Suidoosterfees, the 2018 Franschhoek Literary Festival and most recently to a sold out audience at Norval Foundation.
As one of a pioneer figures in South African poetry, Ingrid Jonker’s work is a small and powerful collection on its own – and Schrire has paid riveting homage to her work in this project.
The video for “ There Is Only One Forever” was shot both at the Norval performance and in the Sound & Motion Studios – a while the footage is simple DIY at best, the delivery of the track is captivating. Subtle pizzicato delivery on all accounts accumulates as a whirling, almost orchestral peak.
Schrire deftly handles Jonker’s work with the sort of reverent fragility which both expands it and exquisitely hones in on it too.
