Ahead of their biggest show to date opening for The Cure in Joburg & Cape Town, Cape Town-based rock band Southern Wild have signed a five-year development deal with legendary musician and producer Theo Crous’ newly-formed Bellville Records.
“During my last 25 years of producing I have rarely come across a band that is so truly unique and eclectically talented. I have no doubt that Southern Wild will contribute to the export of South African music for years to come!” Crous exclaimed, detailing his enthusiasm to work with the band.
“Being offered the development deal by Theo is an incredible opportunity. Our new songs are very special to us, and we believe that the best versions of these songs will be brought about through this collaboration,” comments vocalist Dave Van Vuuren when questioned about working with the legendary producer.
“Signing a five-year development deal sounds daunting, but we know we’re in good hands with Theo who has been so supportive and wants the same thing we do – to make a great album,” explains bassist Alex Smillie.
“We have a whole whack of new songs, and with Theo’s assistance, this will definitely be some of the best music released by us as a band,” drummer Dylan Hunt rounds off.
But with the start of a new chapter inevitably comes the end of another, as guitarist MJ Breytenbach announces his departure from the group.
Wishing MJ well and moving forward as a three-piece, Southern Wild will make use of session musicians, while constantly striving to host magnificent live shows in a variety of formats.
At their core, Southern Wild has always been about the music and between David, Alex and Dylan this is really and truly just the beginning.
