Ghetto Sessions in Khayelitsha is breaking down the barriers that keep the townships isolated, through music

The Steezies vocalist and front man, George Kirkinis, has an extraordinary amount of passion for music and for South Africa, and the combination of the two has manifested itself in all sorts of musical endeavours in a few of Cape Town’s townships.

The latest project he’s been working on is probably his most exciting to date though.

“I met a man called Siyabonga Mbaba in Khayelitsha – he has been throwing these events called Ghetto Sessions. We have the same vision of uniting people through music, and we’ve done three events together thus far,” Kirkinis explains.

“On the 11th of May The Steezies & Nomadic Orchestra will be teaming up with two groups from Khayelitsha – Soundz of the South and the Conscious Marimba Band.”

The Steezies will also feature many of the musicians they’ve discovered in Khayelitsha, in their set.

Joining the fray are Sit The Folk Down and Paul Bothners, who’re lending a hand with sound equipment, and Kirkinis has managed to organise a stage at Shack Theatre, so the jol is on.
