I’ve only really started to pay attention to the Met Costume Exhibition (aka Met Gala) over the last few years.
If I’m being honest it was Rihanna’s omelette gown that truly sparked my obsession.
The theme of this year’s event was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” with camp being interpreted as exaggerated fashion and inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration”.
This is also the first year since I’ve started paying attention to this spectacle of fashion, that majority of those in attendance seem to actually be on-theme.
But there were a few that stood headdress and shoulders above the rest.
Celine Dion in Oscar de la Renta looking like a bauws Las Vegas showgirl.
Gwen Stefani in Jeremy Scott looking like she stepped off the set of Moulin Rouge.
Lady Gaga in four different outfits by her bestie Brendon Maxwell.
Janelle Monae in Christiano Siriano nailing the theme.
Katy Perry in Jeremy Scott for Moschino is basically the definition of lit.
Cardi B in custom Thom Browne and probably my favourite of the night let’s not play here.
And of course, Jared Leto (and a bust of his own head) in Gucci.
Bonus points to Kacey Musgraces in this pink Moschino Barbie dress complete with blonde hair and hairdryer.
