Ruby Gill’s “Your Mum” will knock you flat with gritty, raw honesty

Ruby Gill has a big voice. The kind of voice which is strong enough to knock you over with its prowess. Take the knock – it’s worth every vocal punch.

Off the back of a sold-out tour of the homeland, the South African born, Melbourne-hailing folk artist just dropped a live Sofar Session of her Australian debut and in the dimly lit intimacy of the venue the song hits harder than ever.

Small and bespectacled, barefoot and swaying behind the mic – her voice billows forth in a rich and volatile wave. With just a guitar leaning against her hips, she’s stripped down and simplified.

“Where were you when I was breaking at the seams?/ Do you think I was fine?/ Do I look fucking fine?” she demands of the room, almost shaking – exploring the crushing experience of being unable to live up to what others want or need.

It’s defiant, roaring, pivotal and powerful in equal measure. Broadly narrative, every emotion hits you like a hammer blow.
