Fresh Flex Friday

Fresh Flex Friday #95

We all find ourselves on a personal journey of discovery and acceptance at some point in our lives. Sometimes it isn’t easy to recognize when this needs to happen, often it is thrust upon on us. The important thing to remember is that there are many incredible things waiting for us to embrace in this life and if we live intentionally we can find our path of meaning and fulfilment.

There is a story behind every piece of music, art or creative outlet. Enjoy what’s on the surface but consider the origin too and maybe you’ll find a point of relativity.

JAKE – Latitude

Jake Bennett, formerly of Early Hours, has been based in the USA for the last 4 years growing and honing his skills as a songwriter. A career that has become a sustainable avenue for him. His new project JAKE is a smooth blend of his formative years bouncing between South Africa and London in combination with his contemporary phase in the States. He exhibits a strong understanding of pop-centric songwriting with a cheeky indie edge. This is classic summer sing-a-long material, the kind you hear in a romantic comedy movie montage.

Marianthe – Me & Myself

It doesn’t matter where it is made in the world, contemporary pop music is a product of a well-oiled machine. Marianthe has a good voice, understands the capability of her range and will be able to perform this track live with ease. But there is nothing surprising about this song. Lyrically it is a reimagining of countless other smash hits from decades past, heartbreak and the consequent emancipation from those feelings in a moment of self-discovery. The melodies and beat are to pop music what sunscreen is to summer. But there is a reason why this style is so popular, it has a receptive audience who eats it up every time.

Tshego – No Ties feat King Monada

This collaboration was so highly anticipated that it was caught trending on Twitter on release day. The afro-pop, bashment influenced groove lays down a smooth foundation for this style’s signature processed vocal filters. Tshego’s delivery is beautiful, with a warm tone that serves as a harmonious counterbalance to Monada’s Khelobedu infusion.

Frank Casino – Sudden feat Cassper Nyovest and Major League DJz

There is a perfect storm of cinematic elements in this video which floods you with a sense of nostalgia and pays homage to classics. The feature film style establishing opening scene that delivers a message to the haters and naysayers, and the story that runs congruently through the video giving a real-time effect to the narrative. This combined with the entourage/ crew vista in the backdrop of the main scenes which was a key factor in early 2000s rap videos and still plays its part in grime videos. The track itself is deadly with Cassper delivering a verse that many of his critics have found to be redeeming.

Gigi Lamayne – Amanzi feat Zakwe

There are a few reasons why it is incredible to be hearing new music from Gigi Lamayne. Towards the end of 2018, she was hospitalized for depression, an ongoing battle that she was close to being defeated by. The pressure of the industry and the role that she had to maintain almost ended her career and her life. She has come out of that experience feeling empowered and ready to face the world again. And her new body of work is a testament to her strength, which should be celebrated.
