No Rules Cafeteria is back to show you that there are no rules on dining in the city

NFollowing a 2 day sold-out show in May at No End Art Gallery, the No Rules Cafeteria team is back on the 31st of August to wow guests with a 3 course tasting menu, drinks paired per course, live local musicians, art and an intimate experience.

No Rules Cafeteria is a seasonal event that moves around the city and this month they’ve chosen Dassler’s (a secluded cafe situated at the back of the Puma Social Club concept store in De Kort Street) as their next venue.

The event runs from 12pm to 5pm and seats are limited to only 50 people.

No Rules was started by collective, Sydney Keeney, a graphic designer and gallery manager at No End Art Space; Tayla Foong, a marketing manager at a well-known furniture brand; and chef and food stylist, Khanya Mzongwana.

“No Rules was borne out of our passion for food, art and boutique events. We wanted to create a space of self expression, and to give our chef, Khanya, a space to do whatever she wants. Conventional restaurant spaces are somewhat of a taboo to her, restricting her creativity,” says Foong.

The star of the show is chef, Mzongwana (Undignified as some may know her) who was famed by her success with the Off-the-wall pop-up series which took place in Johannesburg and Pretoria from 2013 to 2017. In recent times Khanya, who is now freelancing as a chef, food stylist and writer – has been cooking up some delicious recipes and videos with Woolworths Taste magazine.

“The No Rules menu has a whole lot of Sicilian springtime influence; a place I’ve been having hot romantic thoughts about for a really long time. As we bid farewell to the winter, simple, clean, sharp flavours rule this time around. This August, the No Rules lunch table heaves under the weight of big, lavish salads, delicious fresh fish, silken tofu with enormous flavour and crispy edges, and some cool new condiments I’ve been working on. There are also a couple nods to friends and cooks whose work I love and I’ve included some adapted versions of stuff they made for me, that I never forgot about,” says Mzongwana.

Sit back, mingle and eat to your heart’s content while taking in the eclectic decor at Dassler’s and listening to the sultry sounds of acoustic jazz-duo Ariel and Juana. The event will conclude with boogie down session by seasoned DJ, Half ‘n Half.

Collaborators for this event include Cape Town based, Six Dogs Gin, Fox & Wolf Mixers, Devil’s Peak Brewery and Publik Wine to name a few.

No Rules Cafeteria is a bookings only event (there are 50 seats available) and tickets can be purchased via Quicket.
