Jay Cubed and Renegade team up for a sultry Jozi sunset of a video for their collab “Robbery”

Jay Cubed has come a long way since dropping his debut in 2016. The Mafikeng born and bred rapper has already ticked the likes to Primavera Sound (Spain), MIDEM (France) and now SXSW (Austin, Texas) off his list and it’s seemed pretty effortless.

Now, with a imminent EP I Took My Own Advice on the horizon (released through Spanish label Little Red Corvette Records) he’s just dropped “Robbery”, paired up alongside Renegade.

Shot in the heart of Joburg, the video is, in fact, a fashion shoot turned impromptu music video. That explains the crisp neckerchiefs, bucket hats and block-colour bomber jackets. The city’s high rise buildings scrape the the skyline. Converse is stamped all over the place.

It’s a sultry, stripped track navigating the powers of seduction. Chiming steel-drum counters a solid grounding beat. This is Jay Cubed Afro-hip-hop sound that he has termed “Electro Tribal Rap”. Radio-friendly vocals (maybe a little too radio-friendly at times) kick back. Renegade jumps in right on time for a soca-style verse as the sun begins to sink into the Jozi smog.
