Kontras pose some difficult questions in their latest single “Middelklas Middelman”

Stellenbosch-based Afrikaans alternative rock quartet Kontras’ latest video for single “Middelklas Middelman” forces us to take a step back and ask ourselves if we’re really living to our fullest potential.

Kontras is a band who is determined to try and bring a little more life back into the Afrikaans music scene, which they believe has become a dull shadow of what it used to be.

“Middelklas Middelman” (which roughly translates to the average middle-class man for those of the English persuasion), is an easy-going number that’s genuine to its core. With  charming acoustic guitars and comforting melody lines, the song begs the question: is there any reason for us to keep the status quo?

It’s a genuine attempt at starting a conversation about the state of the world and the need for people to break free from the lessons of our fore-fathers which have been taught out of habit and tradition more than anything else.

With its casual, friendly demeanour “Middelklas Middelman” asks us to take a moment and figure out who we really are, instead of who we were brought up to be.
