The Great Yawn’s music video for “California” is a shortcut time machine that’ll have you salivating for summer

Tiger & Lilly Productions have cooked up a feast for the eyes in “California”. Shot and produced by Susan and Heleen van Tonder, the electric sister duo of Pretoria-based production company, perfectly capture the narrative to The Great Yawn’s latest single.

The song is an ode to a lost opportunity to experience California’s eternal summer and the video is a peek into just how Danielle Bakkes envisioned it in all its swanky glory – starring herself as a bougee babe lazing poolside..

This is what the California sound would look like if it were a video. Candy-coloured, vintage palettes, the lazy surf guitar-strum floating through the moment and shimmering harmonies complemented by sequined outfits as the hunky pool-guy flexes in the background.

The ending is purposefully anticlimactic, indicative of Bakkes’s disappointment at losing the chance to go after all. Slightly satirical in a sense, it all hints at the reality that its not as glitz and glam as the picture she painted. It’s a nostalgic nod to the queens and kings of the iconic California Sound that defined the ’60’s and ’70’s: the trailblazers who pioneered the scene. And it’s got all the trimmings to take over this summer season.
