Uncle Mothers has become a staple in the Johannesburg music calendar with their monthly alternative music events which take place at the Irish Pub in Linden.
In 2018 they debuted their eponymous zine, a kind of band community-driven project that features artworks contributed by the bands who have played at their events throughout the year.
After the success of 2018’s edition of The Uncle Mothers Zine, they’ve decided to make this exciting collaborative project into an annual tradition.
“Once a year we make an Uncle Mothers Zine showcasing bands creative sides outside of the music they make,” explains founder Klaas van der Walt. “In 2018 we made our debut Zine. Part of the idea is to help build the band community, as well as the artists involved, and what better way than to have something they were all a part of. The reason for Zine format is because Zines have always been traditional symbol of the DIY scene. That’s how we started, and we do embrace that title.”
“The Zine is made up of unique pieces of art created by all the bands that have played one of our shows during the year as well as show posters,” he continues. “It also features photography from the shows. We also included art from designers that have been involved in the posters that help sell the shows. We feel it’s important to have a physical catalogue of our local scene.”
The Uncle Mothers 2019 Zine will feature unique artwork and photos from SCRAMBLERS, The Tazers, Retro Dizzy, Friends with Pools, BOXER, The Man Motels, Deadly Bites, Shortstraw, Weed Dealer, Nina Jacobson, Jessica Joy Steyn, Elio Illustration & many more.
To launch their 2019 zine, Uncle Mothers is throwing an event on Saturday at the Irish, with performances by the klubs and Shongololo.
There will be a limited number of zines available for purchase at the event so be sure to get there early to secure your copy!
