It’s been over three years since Haitian-Canadian dance producer KAYTRANADA dropped his debut 99.9% – a lurid and lavish album awash in guest appearances.
Now he’s got BUBBA, his second full-length release on the pile (with a slew of featured artists including Pharrell Wiliams, Tinashe and Charlotte Day Wilson) and a freshly released video for “10%” to boot.
Here he’s teamed up with up-and-coming R&B songstress Kali Uchis for an ode to 2000’s vogue for the video, directed by Steven Isaac-Wilson. The track itself is held down by a thumping, wholesome house beat and laced in warped-synth textures while Uchis’ crooning vocals navigate rocky lost love.
“You keep on taking from me boy, where’s my 10%?” she demands coolly, sleek and glamourous, a fanned stack of dollar bills clutched in her fingers. It’s a warm and wholesome house party of a video – the girls and the boys cut shapes in fashion to raise the roof. There are house plants flanking the vinyl DJ booth, balloons bunched at the ceiling.
KAYTRANADA wraps house music around his little finger with an organic ease found few and far between.
