The Shabs waste no time in imploring us to be kinder and more empathetic to one another in their latest single and video “To the Streets”.
With their trademark folk-punk sound The Shabs ask us to shelve our pride and look out for those who are less fortunate than us, but don’t worry, there’s nothing preachy or holier-than-thou about their request. There’s a sense of comfort to the song that makes this intimidating task seem that much more manageable.
The video adds to this comfort and familiarity. It’s set in a studio so the band relies on their personality, both collective and individual, to tell the story. In a world where the overwhelming majority is struggling, the thought of being generous is frightening because, let’s be honest, most of us could do with a helping hand but the gentle confidence that The Shabs carry makes you think that maybe being a bit kinder and more empathetic won’t be the end of the world after all.
On its own “To the Streets” won’t change the world but its comfort and quiet confidence might be enough to inspire a movement of empathy and compassion.
