ADV favours relatability over originality with his new Enigmatic EP

ADV’s new EP Enigmatic is a soundtrack to memory. It comes from a deeply personal place, and for those of us who know all too well the feeling of being stuck in nostalgia, ADV might be more relatable than you think.

The tracks are grungy with dragging vocals over big blaring riffs and drums. It may not seem like the sound of sheltering warmth, but it’s backed by an intuitive style. There’s more than rock and groove to these tracks, there’s a history to them, ADV’s history, and every so often it comes through with clarity.

ADV was exposed to all sorts of music from a young age, and that’s possibly what can account for the mixed genres he adopts in his writing. “No One Knows” works on classic indie rock, Just Jinger, but harder, while “So It Seems” has the blues of The Black Keys and maybe even a little Depeche Mode too.

ADV certainly allows himself to be inspired by others, maybe too much, because at the end of it we’re left wondering who he really is. Has his hunger to make a name for himself made him a more relatable, likeable artist, or outplayed his originality entirely?
