Ethyl Ether’s video for “Therapy?” is a shining example of adaptability

Lockdown has forced Cape Town-based psychedelic outfit Ethyl Ether to go the postmodern route in the video for their unsettling single “Therapy?”.

The track is a relentless commentary about the human race’s inability to ever settle and be happy with what we have. A wall of sound that never lets up, the song has a quiet mania to it that gets under your skin, so it’s only fitting that the video should be of a horror bent.

Rather than let the lockdown stymie their plans, Ethyl Ether decided to get creative with existing material. Instead of shooting together as a band (because *cough* that would be illegal) they cut footage from classic and cult horror films into a montage filled with distorted imagery and ever-effective tropes that fit the unnerving nature of the song brilliantly.

The result is a loose narrative that slowly descends further into madness with Ethyl Ether’s impervious soundtrack at the reins.
