This week’s episode of features Jovi and Kgmotso from BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness), who draw deep inspiration from indigenous music, infusing them with raps and a very raw rock ‘n’ roll attitude.
“Podcasts are fast becoming spaces where one can create or link up with a community of like-minded people,” Kgmotso explained to me.
“Moreover being able to share your story from your perspective is precious and gives one an opportunity to connect with people from different viewpoints. Being part of this podcast felt like having a catch up session with a friend. Talking about what is important to us, the good, the not so bad and the funny.”
Striving to rectify Western assumptions and shine a light on post-apartheid South Africa from a contemporary perspective, there are few SA bands like BCUC.
And there are even fewer who can claim to have played Glastonbury, Roskilde and Afropunk, and recorded with living legends Saul Williams and Femi Kuti.
