You might not have heard of them – yet – but Kirkland, a four-piece outfit who hail from Bloemfontein, should definitely be on your radar.
Comprising of friends Heinrich-John Geldenhuys (vocals and rhythm guitar), Callie van der Merwe (lead guitar and piano), Willem van der Merwe (bass) and Louwrens Kock (drums and percussion), this small-town alt-rock band has a distinctive sound that’s anything but small.
Although their music falls solidly under the banner of the alt-rock genre, Kirkland’s sound navigates a wealth of influences, ranging from folk to indie and even a hint of the blues. Their songs are characterised by earnestly emotional song writing and Heinrich-John’s soulful baritone which radiates warmth and steals the show.
The band has released two consecutive music videos – one for their single “The Fight” and the other for their hauntingly beautiful cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”. The videos, both of which are shot within a recording studio, serve as simple, unadorned visual accompaniments for the songs and give you an intimate opportunity to see the band in their element.
