M2KaNE drops a dark, CCTV-film shot video for his new single “Elevate”

PE-based rapper M2KaNE has a new video out for his latest single “Elevate” and it’s a grungy throw down of dark melodies and even darker flow.

Directed by Felix Maponga, there’s this CCTV-film effect thrown over all the visuals, giving them an ominous feeling that matches the track perfectly. It’s like we’re watching M2KaNE from some security control room, even if he is just dancing around an empty lounge.

The track opens with this warped choir effect that slowly morphs into something better fitted to The Da Vinci Code soundtrack, but again, I reiterate how fitting it all feels, tying into an overall sound aesthetic that’s both brooding and provocative. I recall a lyric from his debut album The Heartist’s EP that goes “Do you determine the value of your artistry through the admiration of others or do you find it in yours?” – I think it sums up the confidence behind his sound pretty well.

In unusual fashion, M2KaNE has chosen to work with producer Wichi1080 rather than self-producing, but honestly the result isn’t all that different to if he had done it himself. If anything, it’s refreshing to see M2KaNE extend his artistry for the sake of a more diverse sound.
