Public Enemy are joined by Nas, Black Thought & more for a power-packed rendition of “Fight the Power” at BET Awards

This year’s BET Awards kicked off with singer Keedron Bryant performing a stirring rendition of his song “I Just Wanna Live” which provided the perfect intro for rap icons Public Enemy to unveil a remix of their anthem “Fight The Power”.

Chuck D and Flavor Flav reunited alongside Nas, Rapsody, Black Thought, YG, Questlove, Jahi, DJ Lord, Professor Griff and S1Ws, to update their tune in the wake of the protests and rallies stemming from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless others that were murdered at the hands of the police.

The powerful track, which was released in the summer of 1989 and featured in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, still resonates 31 years later in the midst of these protests which seems disheartening, but this time it really feels as though a real change is taking place.

In an especially poignant line of the updated version, Nas raps “I’m fighting the power right now/Thanks to you, Flav and PE putting it down/Putting your life on the line so I can rap now.”

This is necessary viewing for everyone because the revolution starts with you.
