Bouwer Bosch drives home a powerful message of cultural unity on “Liefde Love Uthando”, with Gazelle and Freddy L

Bouwer Bosch has long been at the forefront of indie-Afrikaans music, and while his later work with Dans Dans Lisa didn’t really take itself too seriously, his recent solo offerings have been far more grounded than you might expect.

His latest video single “Liefde Love Uthando”, in collaboration with Gazelle and Freddy L (from The Voice SA), is, in simple terms, pretty damn beautiful. With euphoric melodies and a powerful blend of English, Afrikaans and Zulu lyricism, Bosch explores what it means to share in culture and in love.

“I wanted to write a song that reminds people we are more alike than we are different,” he explains – a powerful message driven home with the help of Freddy L’s crooning, beautifully warm vocals, Gazelle’s magnetic creativity and a feverish bass line written by Concord Nkabinde (bassist for Johnny Clegg, Abdullah Ibrahim, Vusi Mahlasela).

The video is made up of dance inserts featuring scenes of Xhosa dance routines, a local Pantsula group and a group of Afrikaans folk dancers, as well as a docu-style intro in conversations with these artists, discussing the power of dance and culture.

Together they create an atmosphere of vivid energy that inspires the music, culminating in the words, “Ek wil nou hier by jou bly”. This is what real collaboration looks like.
