City Tales Events releases Winter Tales 20: a tingling deep house compilation album featuring some of SA’s best underground talent

Any Durban muso who loves a good jol will know of the City Tales pop-up events. Aimed at celebrating the music Durban has to offer, as well as unique city spaces, City Tales’ latest project, Winter Tales 20, takes the shape of a compilation album, and while we wish we could enjoy this music live and in the flesh, 11 tracks of electro-bliss still suffice.

Compiled by DJ Ntukuza, one of Durban’s most renowned underground DJ’s, as well as Lection Durgro from Eternal Agency, Winter Tales 20 is a future-facing collection of deep house rhythms and tingling melodies. Featuring music from Fred Everything, Tigerskin, Gina Jeanz, Fish Go Deep, Dark Art, SYML, China Moses, Mochi Men, Mumbi Kasuma, Hollis Parker, Coco Cognac Brown, Clive From Accounts, Squares, HP Vince, and Kid Fonque, you won’t be left wanting more. There really is a little bit of everything here, held together by some of the genre’s finest purveyors.

Listen out for the lullaby vocals of “Symmetry”, the disco manic samples on “Feel For You” and the experimental, almost broken piano on “Breaking Point”. They’re all real standouts, though no track seems to delight as much as “Tropic City” by Gina Jeans and Mumbi Kasuma. With shapeshifting, Afro-pop melodies, pacing percussion and crystal cut vocals, it shines.

Order the album now through Bandcamp or via City Tales, using the code Texxandthecity for a 20% discount.
