“Dusty Cassette Tapes” is a nostalgic portrait of Master Kiii shot by Hlumelo Slatsha. It captures the melancholic and vulnerable mood of “Dusty Demos” and turns it into a visual journey of transparent pain and thought.
The short film starts with a kid finding the “Dusty Demos” VHS tape and putting it in. Raw footage of Master Kiii in his vinyl-covered room appears, microphone in hand, and an intimate live performance of “01-06-19” begins. The emotion in Master Kiii’s voice echoes throughout.
The music transitions into “Lost” and we’re taken to a gorgeously shot visual of a despondent Master Kiii skating through the streets. Capturing the thoughtfully hypnotic nature of the track perfectly, the artist glides calmly through the neighbourhood, before receiving a call that brings him to an abrupt stop. We’re served a sombre silence and a close up of a dejected and disheartened Master Kiii.
The silence continues for a short while, accompanying imagery of the artist on his bed with a case of beer. “Broken Cassette Tapes” starts playing before the visuals transition back to the vinyl-covered room for another powerful live performance.
Directed by Hlumelo Slatsha and Thando Moyake (aka Master Kiii), “Broken Cassette Tapes” is a beautiful illustration of Master Kiii’s intimate journey.
