Everything considered, Cornelius SA is having a pretty epic 2020 when it comes to climbing that electro-elite ladder. Since inking a deal with Amsterdam-based Armada Music right before lockdown, his hit single “Diamonds”, featuring Netherlands’ own Felix van Gingkel, climbed the charts on the United Kingdom’s Music Week Top 10 Cool Hits, as well as on Maxim Lany’s BBC1 residency – positioning him comfortably within the burgeoning international sector.
Now, as this wild year draws slowly to a close, he’s keeping the ball rolling with a driving African-infused techno banger “Free Your Mind”. He also roped Jordan Arts (of The Cavemen) into the mix for some vocals – and a Caveman remix to shake things up.
It’s a late night EDM banger to get your feet moving. Built on a foundation of spacey laser synth and a grating bassline, the good stuff drops along with the driving beat which shoves the track forward in a froth of African percussive texture and deep techno integrity.
The Caveman remix sets things off on a higher-tone trajectory – the African inflections are abandoned in favour of breezy synths against the equally hard-hitting beat-line. Two faces of the same coin, and they both hit right.
It’s all quite something from a small-town boy from Soshanguve, but Cornelius is out there paving the way for South African electronic music and black DJs alike, a sweetly earned success which has him going places, and fast.
