Introducing Selective Live: the intimate performance venue bringing bespoke sonic experiences to the Mother City

At 189 Buitengracht Street in Cape Town above Mazaari’s restaurant, a special kind of magic quietly unfolds. A magic orchestrated by Selective Live – performance and events venue and possibly one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets… until now.

Operating as record label and production company Selective Hearing’s side-hustle since 2018, Selective Live has hit the sweet spot between views, food and above all, smooth neo-soul, hip hop jams from some of the city’s undiscovered gems for almost every weekend since they opened.

In a bid to provide recording facilities, video content, and all-round support for the local music scene – a scene that has arguably been haemorrhaging since the world tweaked out – the private venue hosts local artists from all corners of the Mother City’s creative claw. Names like up-and-coming R&B princess Gemma Fassie, renovator of old-school gangster rap SbudaHH, and D’Angelo Tribute Band have graced the characteristic chequered carpet stage.

“Our main incentive is to provide the recording facilities and video content for artists. Depending on what the artist would like, we also have an entrance fee that the artists can decide on. We have an open door policy for anyone that would like to work with us,” explain the owners of Selective Live.

Selective Live have an open door policy for anyone who would like to work with them so if you’re a budding muso and you feel your vibe would suit the venue, you can DM them on instagram or contact Thabiso at thabiso@selectivelive.co.za.
