Meet MP Light: a multi-lingual muso who brings touches of pop and R&B to his traditionally-rooted, African sound. And with thousands of streams across Soundcloud and Spotify, as well as the 2019 Ekurhuleni Hip Hop Development Rookie of the Year Award under his belt, his latest track and music video “Bangibona” is a real display of the energy he’s brewing.
Delivering a kind of alternative pop mixed unapologetically with homegrown melodies and electro-heavy production, the track has been a fan favourite since its release on his Seasons Blues EP. It also comes from a pretty low-point in MP’s life: a time during which he felt underestimated for his musical goals, addressing his feelings with light sensitivity on the song.
In terms of the video, it was shot, surprisingly, on an iPhone – and I say surprisingly because the quality doesn’t seem compromised in any way – following visuals of an athlete intensely training, interspersed with scenes of MP on the guitar. In all honesty though, the video is pretty bland, lacking a solid storyline for viewers to hold on to. Still the track’s tight production makes up for this, offering up a truly interesting mix of genres and sounds that hoist MP Light’s talents up high and mighty.
