Topping over 300k streams with his debut album Nomvula, ShabZi Madallion seems to be on a slow but unstoppable path to success. There’s no denying that 2020 has been a great year for the rapper and MC, and he’s back again this time with a brand new music video for hit single “Wena”.
With visuals by Nicki Walker, the video unfolds in an empty stadium that ShabZi has secured all to himself, while interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage of the muso in studio and on stage, surrounded by other artists and collaborators. Much of the visual is also heavily stylized, with this kind of old film grain effect laid over the studio footage, giving it an archival feel that’s a nice piece of added artistic touch.
“Wena” explores ShabZi’s independent journey into the music industry, reflecting on the determination and self-belief that’s got him this far. It’s inspiring, but whether that comes through behind the beefed up production and repetitive bass line, I’m not so sure. I think the sincerity he’s after will only come with a little more space in the writing and in the composition, nevertheless ShabZi knows exactly what he’s doing, and he’s doing it well.
