A self-proclaimed groovy-Xhosa-futurist, Guy Onke is a rapper hailing from the Mother City, and wants us all to know that no genre can box him in. He combines elements of alt-rock with afropop and umbhaqanga to form a kind of hybrid genre that he’s dubbed ‘XhosadelicWAVE’ – and with his latest single “iiWAY”, that fusion couldn’t be any more apparent.
Featuring fellow Captonian muso GREEK, the track is simple but concise, lifted off Onke’s recent 8-track EP Izandi Zomoya. Carried by an airy synth melody that fills the entire bass line, “iiWAY” creates the perfect sound space for Onke’s rough vocals to shine.
The track comes with an accompanying video as well, shot by Ingz in the streets of Langa. The idea behind the visual is to exhibit Onke and his friends simply hanging out and having a good time, whilst simultaneously paying homage to Langa itself, and the township roots Onke’s music has grown up on.
