The Kiffness’ Club Remix of Turkish street drummer Bilal Göregen goes viral

Almost a month ago on Friday the 18th of December, The Kiffness released his remix of Bilal Göregen’s rendition of Finnish folk song, “Ievan Polkka”, and pretty soon after the release the video made the front page of 9gag & Reddit.

To date its gone on to notch over 13 million views combined across social, with over 3.1 million views on Twitter alone.

Bilal’s performance of Ievan Polkka first appeared on the internet in 2018, but went viral when someone added “vibe cat” to the video.

“When I first saw the video, I thought it was incredibly catchy and I thought it would be a fun song to remix. So I did a short, live looping remix & put it up on the internet,” Scott tells me when I asked how this particular opportunity came about.

“The response was great and many people seemed to want an official release, so I DM’d my remix to Bilal on Instagram and asked him if he’d be keen to collab. To my surprise, he got back to me, saying that he liked my rendition and that I should do a full edit. We agreed to a 50/50 split on any revenue the remix would make,” Scott adds.

With the admin side of things ironed out Scott got straight to work roping in Raiven Hansmann on saxophone and Jane from Veranda Panda on violin. “I had planned an interview with Peach van Pletzen during my time in Joburg for his upcoming talk show,” Scott begins to explain. “So we killed two birds with one stone and went to his studio after the interview to record my vocals and trumpet. Peach is also an excellent sound engineer so I roped him into mixing and mastering the song. He nailed it!”

With surf videographer Paul Daniel as his DOP, and gaffer Tobie Smuts’ to help him with the greenscreen and lights, Scott roped his wife into being the backup dancer, and film students William Annesley and Ethan Lundy who helped key out the green and just generally make the video look lekker.

This marks the 285th time that The Kiffness has gone viral, but with its success in Italy, Turkey, as well as a surprise pick-up in China, this one slaps a bit differently.
