Since Durban Gqom legends DJ Lag and DJ Tira dropped their visual for beat bomb “Siyagroova” on the 27th of January, the single has reached the Top 100 song chart in the country and premiered on MTV Base Africa.
Shot in Durban by long-time collaborator, Travys Owen, the seamless edit directed by Allison Swank is the most satisfying marriage between song and visual. Editor Jade de Jager for Post Modern has stitched the footage into a four-minute video that resembles a V8 clocked in fifth gear all the way.
The dance crew 031GOATS channel a high-powered energy through their pumped up kicks translating that quintessential Gqom beat into a punchy vision.
On the video, director Allison Swank comments: “This song gives a sense of ominous excitement, I wanted the visuals to also give a balance of joy and mischief. The 031GOATS are super sick Durban dancers with the right boyish energy and playful spirit for the job.”
Still in his twenties, DJ Lag’s rise from South African township to the international electronic stage is next level and “Siyagroova” with DJ Tira is testament to this.
