Jonny Hayes’ new track, “I Won’t Let You Go”, is as sweetly nostalgic as it is expertly moving

Following hot on the heels of his debut video for “Bathe”, whose polished visuals dropped in early January, Hout Bay local Jonny Hayes is dishing out the singles off his upcoming solo project.

“I Won’t Let You Go” comes as an effortlessly serene narrative on the push and pull qualities of being pursued and wanted. It’s about the realities of growing up, the nostalgia of it all and just what comes with moving into the world. This serves as a common thread throughout his music and no doubt will be explored in ever more depth in his upcoming EP.

For now, one can indulge in the acoustic intricacies of “I Won’t Let You Go”, who’s subtle melancholia is cut through with warm vocalism and the sort of agile acoustic melodies favoured by the likes of José González. It’s a nostalgia-soaked exploration of indie folk – packing a polished punch unexpected of a newcomer to the scene.

The track reels you in for a gentle ride through the emotive poeticism of Hayes’ contemplation. Hop aboard for the ride.
