GalleryONE11 in Cape Town’s new guest curator, Jeanne Hugo, kicks off with a show titled Here Tomorrow Gone Today on 6th May. She explores the rebel roots of nostalgia. If a certain suite of influences determine our deck of cards, what would these select artists say they were?
This exhibition pays particular homage to the unique inspiration of a bygone South African era. Whether it be a life on the road and jam-packed arenas, childhood comic heroes or the kaleidoscopic spectrum of influence and inspiration, our collective visual stories are repeatedly moulded, laundered, reinterpreted and now presented in this show.
One of the featured artists is Jaco Snakehead Venter, Fokofpolisiekar’s drummer and Fokof Lager brand manager. Some might already be familiar with his sensational photography, the rest are in for a treat. Jaco has the ability to turn mundane scenarios into compelling works of black & white art. Not that any part of this homegrown rock star’s background has been humdrum. The curated selection of artistic photographs will take you all the way from backstage to Bellville in one go.
One of Jaco’s pieces on display is titled Spookpiele:
Francois van Coke & Hunter Kennedy from Fokofpolisiekar
Jaco explains the story behind the photo: “Between 2006 and 2017 a lot has changed in the music industry, especially with the rise of social media and the instant and fleeting nature of music releases these days.
That’s why when Fokofpolisiekar brought out our first full length album in 11 years, back in 2017, we decided to do a traditional press run like we would have done in 2006. It was three days of mostly driving around in the greater Johannesburg area and talking to journalists and publications about what it was like recording music again – nights were spent drinking until dawn because we didn’t have to worry about getting on a stage. It was a lot of fun but also quite taxing. This frame captures some of that ‘Day 3 Road-Weariness’ in a lift at the Independent Media building in downtown Johannesburg.”
