Take a hot air balloon trip through a fantasy storybook in Zybrandt’s latest single and video, “Kamoefleer”

Afrikaans folk-pop takes a fantastical turn in the subtle hands of Zybrandt. After going solo with his back-stepping debut “Anders” a couple of months ago, he takes a different tack with “Kamoefleer” – enter a storybook account of just about all the characters he’s ever wanted to play.

The track comes as an exploration of the many perspectives of oneself – and where it might err a little on the basis of sweet, crooning, slow simplicity, the accompanying visual enchants with a motion graphic, collage-esque storybook of an adventure.

Created by Jeremy Farber, of For Tomorrow Productions, the video adopts a vaguely 1700’s style, pasting scrapbook cutouts of Zybrandt himself against a series of dynamic backdrops as he navigates every role from washed-up sailor, to hot air balloon pilot.

The themes are classic and perhaps a little cliche, but somehow that’s what makes it all work. Shot from a cannon into outer space? We’ll take it. Swallowed by a whale on a date with a mermaid? All the better for the live performance from the back of said whale’s tongue. And with it all, Zybrand breathes fresh life into Afrikaans folk with ideas that spark just a little differently from the rest.
