It feels pretty apt now that one of the first bands I saw again, after the shit show that was the last two years, was Nomadic Orchestra. I’ll be honest and add that I nurse a soft spot for these boys largely due to my general angst at the waning of balkan/ska era which peaked a little too long ago for my liking.
But enough nostalgia – all I’m saying is it’s good to hear these guys again. This time around they’re back with a snappy ode to the gradual lifting of the pandemic regulations, titled “Out & About”. Over an Afro-Balkon backbone of layered brass, rousing percussive claps, and infectiously jangling guitar, they belt out a couple of well chosen verses which pay homage to getting back to that boogie. Something along the lines of dancing up close and personal with people again, and unashamedly sharing a smoke. Oh, and brandy and coke.
“Out & About” comes along with a cheeky little animated visual, put together by the talented Martinus Van Tee, which sees the boys making light of the last few years as they team up as a superhero-esque group to take on the proverbial monster that is COVID. Needless to say, they win, rally the Cape Town crowds and proceed to take to Table Mountain as their stage.
Say what you will, but balkan was a golden age, and the Nomads are here to just keep that candle burning.
