Angie Oeh’s latest track “Big Booty Bitch” feat. Peach Van Pletzen is a raunchy, in-your-face ode to sex

Meet Angie Oeh. She calls herself a mumble rapper, crafting an Afrikaans R&B sound with the primary objective of aggravating her listeners. She wants to provoke conversations with her music; conversations about sexism, homophobia, gender-based-violence, and all the forms of inequality people face today.

Her latest track “Big Booty Bitch” is a raunchy, in-your-face ode to sex, and it doesn’t shy away from explicit lyricism. Oeh drops bars like “baby skud jou boobies/ cuddle en kyk movies” to a recurring melody that riffs back and forth throughout the track.

It’s a defiant number, yet I wonder how it fits in with Oeh’s commitment to speaking out about social justice. The track’s overt sexualization is obviously deliberate, but it may not be easily read that way by everyone.

Still Oeh has certainly come a long way since she first started making music. Her first single “Dis Jou Wyfie” was recorded on a beat-up Samsung A23 in a closet in her house in Pretoria, but “Big Booty Bitch” marks a step up in the transgressive artist’s career.

Featuring Afrikaans powerhouse Peach Van Pletzen, who brings an added layer of blunt playfulness to the song, Oeh’s collaborative offering may be all tongue-in-cheek, still she’s not pulling punches when it comes to her career. She’s in that phase where image means as much as the music itself, and she’s pushing a believable persona.
