Spotify launch “Freedom Sounds: From Kwaito to Amapiano” documentary and two dedicated playlists in celebration of Freedom Day

On Tuesday night, Spotify hosted an event to launch their documentary “Freedom Sounds: From Kwaito to Amapiano” as well as two dedicated playlists “Sound of Freedom” and “Kwaito classics.”

The documentary directed by Chris Kets and Lindiwe Mngxitama tells the history of Amapiano, the South African genre that has taken the UK’s post-lockdown party scene by storm.

The history of Amapiano starts with Kwaito which originated in Soweto and whose rise to the mainstream epitomised the sound of freedom in the early post-apartheid years.

Spotify invited big name artists in both genres to cruise around Johannesburg in a minibus taxi and tell their own stories of Amapiano and its relationship to Kwaito.

Among those featured are legendary Kwaito crew TKZee, Bongo Muffin’s Thandiswa Mazwai, Kalawa Jazmee Records co-founder and producer Oskido, Mandla Mofokeng of kwaito crew Stompies. As well as Amapiano sensations Young Stunna, Uncle Waffles, Pabi Cooper, MFR Souls and DJ Stokies.
