Amy Lilley’s new single “These Walls” is a nostalgic R&B ode to endings

Freshly crowned Apple Music’s Up Next Artist for South Africa, Amy Lilley has racked up an impressive repertoire of singles and a SAMA nomination to boot since she powered onto the scene two years ago. And all before the release of her debut album, Petrichor. Let’s just say t’s quite clear she’s here for the long haul.

While we wait on Petrichor, we’ve got a brand new single and video to indulge in – and while “These Walls” keeps things consistent with it’s nostalgia-dipped nuance, it also breaks some newer waters as she navigates a decidedly early 2000’s R&B continuum this time around.

Off the bat “These Walls” is characteristically layered, navigating the almost relieved aftermath of a relationship through the eyes of one messed around one too many times. “If these walls could talk,” comes the prevailing refrain as she waxes lyrical on the transition from happy and stable to a deadweight relationship.

The accompanying video, directed by Kalai Faye Barlow, is a gorgeously dynamic juxtaposition between a pensive Lilley – donned in a shocking pink dress suit – and elegant choreography courtesy of Tanner Bond. It’s weighted in emotion and poetic movement – and Lilley once again reminds us, frame after vivid frame, just why we’re rooting so hard for her.
