Howie Combrink keeps those uplifting tunes coming with sun-soaked romanticism in his latest single and video, “Summer Sunshine”. Ahead of an imminent Ladysmith Black Mambazo collaboration due to drop later this year, and an album in the works which will hit the airwaves in January 2023, Combrink finds solace in simplicity.
“Summer Sunshine” harks back to his earlier, predominantly acoustic works, striking a balance between modern hooks and retro rock ‘n’ roll-esque grooves. That being said, the overriding tones of the track is unapologetically country-folk infused, flecked with the aforementioned textures simply for vibrancy.
It’s an unequivocal love song – wrapped in all the cosy, cushy romanticism that you might expect. Combrink waxes nostalgic over a lover a little too far away, reminiscing on the good times both gone and to come.
The visual, directed by Combrink himself and shot by Graeme Wyllie is a sun-soaked afternoon frolic in a field if there ever was one. He and his lover dance against the backdrop of the setting sun – countered by shots of him belting out the song against a makeshift backdrop of artfully draped sheets and a string of golden lights.
It’s cute and cosy, if a little cliche. But Combrink has a way of delivering it all with decided conviction.
