Dbongz Mahlati creates proudly South African mural for Season 3 of The Mandalorian

Disney+ South Africa has teamed up with local Johannesburg mural artist Dbongz Mahlati to create a proudly South African mural celebrating the much anticipated and critically acclaimed third season of the original, live-action series from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Mandalorian that is now streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Dbongz is a street artist from the West of Johannesburg who started dabbling in the arts back in 2008 when he first came to the city to pursue his tertiary education. He quickly fell in love with the freedom street art afforded him, the colours, the huge canvases in a form of walls, the confidence it instilled in him, and the ability to spread conceptual messages to the masses.

Ahead of his incredibly creation for The Mandalorian’s new season, Dbongz shared his thought process and creative ideation behind the muralsaying, “Beads are a huge part of South African culture, we have used these for various spiritual and decorative reasons, they also unite the different tribes in our country. The idea was to create something that brings The Mandalorian home to SA and make it relatable to us. I did that by capturing the valour and energy of season 3 and keeping true to the original helmet design while adding some colour and charisma to it.”

The artist describes his mural, which can be viewed next to the Gautrain station in Rosebank, as possessing power, strength and unity and he recommends that you use your phone to experience the incredible merger of his art with augmented reality.
