It’s no secret that A.S. Fanning’s dulcet Endless Daze Saturday morning set circa 2018 left most of us swooning to his searing candour. It’s a performance not easily forgotten and neither is much of what he does for that matter.
Ahead of his long-awaited album, Mushroom Cloud, which hits the airwaves next week, “Haunted” comes as a light footed commentary on the ghosts of the past edging into your proverbial future. It’s a searing narrative on detangling yourself from what was so as not to taint what will be and it’s packed full of brooding zest too.
Jangling synth and an effortless drum rhythm counter tinkling indie proclivities come the second verse. Fanning’s baritone timbre unspools melancholia-drenched verses – but it’s the visual counterpart which really makes you blink.
Courtesy of Macrodose, a Brooklyn-based visual art duo Chris Georges and Greg Thrasher, it’s an unsettlingly psychedelic affair, hinged on the concept of Fanning retreating into his own paranoia-induced hallucinations. It’s bizarre and sublime in equal measure – a jarringly contradictory offering which leaves you wanting more.
